162nd Street is a typical Manhattan townhouse consisting of four residential floors and a flat roof. Glazing Vision installed a box skylight to create access to the roof allowing for an outdoor living area equivalent to the size of the townhouse’s interior floors. An added bonus to the additional living space was that it provided enviable views of downtown Manhattan, that the neighbors could only dream of. There were a few planning issues to factor into the project, but they were minimal: as a registered landmark, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) needed to approve any exterior changes, and Dixon was required to provide plans demonstrating the box skylight would not be visible at street level.
The final result is a truly luxurious home with state-of-the-art fittings, and – thanks to the installation of the box skylight – one with a unique rooftop terrace. The rooftop addition dramatically increases both the desirability and value of the property.
Utilizing vacant roof space to create gardens and terraces is not as popular in the States as it is in Europe. As well as offices in Jersey City, Glazing Vision have offices in England and Holland so we are very familiar with these sorts of projects, and therefore we were able to bring our expertise to 162nd Street to ensure there would be no issues when installing the box skylight.
