The way to install a skylight is dependent on what style and brand of skylight you have opted for. You should always consult the manufacturer’s installation guidelines before undertaking a skylight installation.

With Glazing Vision skylights, we recommend that the installation should be undertaken by Glazing Vision Engineers or Approved Installers (installers that have attended a Glazing Vision Installation training course for this product and carry ‘Approved Installer’ status). This will ensure a reliable product and enable the property owner to benefit from the full 10-year warranty on the product.

You should bear in mind that an installation by non-approved installers will result in a reduced warranty period of just 2 years with regards to a Glazing Vision skylight. By following the correct installation procedure, a reliable and high performing end result is guaranteed.

Critical operations that can lead to problems if not done correctly are the lifting, preparation of the curb, and ensuring the correct line and level when mounting. Taking the time to carry out these operations correctly will ensure that the product does not twist or distort, making sure that the installed product has no undue stresses in the frame or glass. Care should be taken when working on the product, avoiding accidental damage and ensuring product reliability.

Below we provide you with a brief overview of what will need to be considered when installing any type of skylight, however, you should download the manufacturer’s relevant installation guide to get a full understanding of the installation process for your particular skylight before installation.

Safety Information

The installation of your skylight may involve working at heights, working at an unusual angle, being in unfamiliar locations or all of these. Before work is commenced, stop and consider the best way to carry out the task and what hazards you might encounter.

You will need to consider:

  • The weight(s) of the product purchased
  • How you will safely transport your skylight product from the delivery vehicle to the installation location
  • All lifting methods and equipment required for safe installation to eliminate manual handling
  • How you will safely access the area to carry out installation
  • Any openings, voids or unprotected edges that might pose a significant risk whilst working at height
  • Use of scaffolding with all appropriate edging, rails and inspection certification
  • If specialist access or equipment is required e.g. a fall arrest system
  • What personal protective safety equipment (PPE) is required for working at height – e.g. harness
  • Methods for safe working, for example, to avoid falling from height, reducing manual handling and so as not to drop equipment
  • How you will transport tools and other equipment to the installation area
  • The number of persons required to assist with safe installation
  • The competence, capability and experience of the installation team to safely carry out the task
  • Impact of weather on safe installation, especially driving rain and high winds. If in doubt, please contact Glazing Vision for assistance

Anticipated hazards may include:

  • Falls from height
  • Working with specialist lifting equipment or third-party lifting
  • Manual handling injury
  • Equipment falling from height
  • Slips, trips and falls
  • Fragile roof areas
  • Finger or clothing entrapment under unit, in mechanical or moving parts
  • Impact of weather conditions
  • Competence of personnel

Pre-Installation Preparation

It’s important to note that these types of products can be very heavy. Due consideration should be given to getting the product onto the roof safely and extreme care taken during installation.

Once your product has arrived you should ensure you have received everything you expected. Your skylight should have arrived undamaged, however there can be some instances where a product could have been damaged in transit. Should you find any damages you should alert the manufacturer immediately. Glazing Vision require any reports of damage to be made within 48 hours from signing the receipt of your delivery, this may change depending on where your skylight has been purchased from.

Next, you should ensure you have received the correct amount of fixings and other items needed to install the skylight. You can check this by referring to the relevant installation guide.

Curb Top Trim Installation (If Specified)

You should consult the relevant installation guidance for instructions on how to install your curb top trim if this has been specified. This will likely consist of cutting the curb top trim to the lengths required and being fixed into place.

Fitting the Lifting Equipment

For heavier skylights you may require the use of lifting equipment. With Glazing Vision skylights, the lifting frame or lugs are usually attached to the product prior to dispatch. Once the product is installed, the lifting equipment should be returned to Glazing Vision.

In the case of Glazing Vision, the lifting frame requested will be fully configurable and will fit any size of product. We offer a drawing of the lifting frame to assist with identifying parts and how they fit together. More information on lifting equipment can be found by contacting your skylight manufacturer or within the relevant installation guide.

Installation Procedure

The installation procedure will differ depending on which type of product is being installed. Step by step instructions can be found within the relevant product installation guide, such as our Glazing Vision installation guides found within our technical downloads area.

Some products offer a simple installation procedure that can be followed by anyone such as the Glazing Vision Flushglaze Fixed Skylight, a simple more standard skylight, however, more complex products such as the Glazing Vision Free Standing Skybox Skylight are more challenging to install, and so with these types of products we require the installation to be undertaken by Glazing Vision Engineers or Approved Installers only.

Prior to commencing any installation you should take photographs of the fully weathered curb and surrounding area for future reference. You should then follow the relevant step by step installation procedure closely.

Interior Finishing

Interior finishing is essential to ensuring the product meets thermal efficiency requirements. These finishes will be detailed within your installation guide. Glazing Vision does not specify the finishes permitted except for the following stipulations:

  • The finish must be built up to the internal dimension of the product – see Glazing Vision’s sales drawings.
  • No interior metal component (for example edging strips for drywall) may touch any part of the product framework.
  • Any airspaces between the aluminum frame of the product and the internal finishes must be filled with insulating material.
  • Nothing should be fixed directly to the product.
  • Nothing should interfere with any mechanisms or controls present or prevent the removal of the treadplate (access is required for maintenance reasons).

Commissioning

With Glazing Vision products, for more complex installations which must be carried out by Glazing Vision Engineers or Approved Installers, commissioning checks should be made. This will ensure the skylight has been installed correctly and performs as required which ensures peace of mind for the client.
